In a world full of misconceptions and almost everyone clinging tightly to what their Grandma said even if its far from the truth, one must be very careful before giving advice simply because people said its so.
So often I come across facts that actually aren't factual and I am also guilty of passing on a few tall tales too that I had no idea was fiction.
Here is a list of fifteen fictions that many believe to be fact.
1. Heading the list and for this one I blame law based television shows. You must wait 24 HRS to report a person missing to the Police. Truth is if you have serious concern about a individual safety and their whereabouts is unknown you can report them missing to Police before the ending of a 24 HR period.
2. That 'Black Holes' are actually holes - A black hole is actually a region of space time with such strong gravitational pull that nothing can escape from inside it.
3. Bananas Grow on Trees - Bananas grow on a large perennial herb that replaces itself.
4. Bats are Blind- Because of the frequent saying "As blind as a Bat" many people believe that a Bats are blind. Truth is all species of Bats can see.
5. Human Beings only have Five Sense - Eventhough many children are thought this in school many Neurologist list nine senses and others identity up to twenty one.
6. House flies die after 24 hours - This isn't true. House flies have a life span of 28 days.
7. Mosquitoes Die after sucking Blood - Only female mosquitoes bite and they don't die after sucking your blood they actually rest for a few days before laying their eggs.
8. Deoxygenated Blood is Blue - There is no blue blood in the human body, blood is always red. Deoxygenated blood and oxygenated blood is simply different shades of red and the veins aren't blue either, they only look blue because of the skin and tissue which covers them.
9. The Great Wall of China is the only Man-made object you can see from space - Contrary to popular belief the Great Wall of China isn't the only man-made structure you can see from space in-fact it is barely visible. You can actually see bridges, the Greenhouse of Almeria, cities at night, airports and the Great Pyramids at Giza.
10. Lightening never Strikes the same place twice - As strange as this may sound lightening can strike the same place more than once and this is an odd that storm observers and researchers have seen nature defy many times.
11. Urine will help ease the pain if a Jelly fish stings you - Unfortunately this isn't true so if you ever got stung by a Jelly Fish and your friend peed on it, you only got peed on my a friend and it probably made it more irritating when you thought the whatever medicinal remedy ingredient in the mixture was taking effect.
12. Touching Toad will give you Warts - We were told as kids that what appears to be bumps on the skin of a toad mixed with greasy substance that toads secrete will give you warts if it comes in contact with the human skin. Not true warts are either hereditary or caused by human viruses.
13. Peanuts are Nuts - I actually for many years thought peanuts were nuts but as it turns out that's not the case peanut is actually a Legume and grows underground, belongs to the same family as peas and beans while walnuts, almonds etc are nuts and grows on trees.
14. Fortune Cookies are a Chinese Tradition - Unfortunately its not and even-though you might think it makes sense because every Chinese restaurant from her to Timbuktu which is a real place that isn't in China as most of us think serves you fortune cookies at the end of your meal they actually originally are from Japan even-though the United States is trying to stake claim to its origin too.
15. A Penny dropped from the top of the Empire State Building will Kill you -
No it won't and Mythbusters actually tested the idea out, they created a gun that could shoot a penny out at 64.4 miles per hour. The same speed a penny travelling downwards from the top of the empire state building would descend before hitting the ground, they fired it at a ballistic dummy and it did very little damage. They also shot each other with the gun and even-though it stung a little it didn't do any damage either.
Truth is, a penny simply does not have enough weight or travel speed descending to kill you, maybe a half pound bag of penny but definitely not a single penny.
In my comments section share some other common things people believe to be true but that isn't. Hopefully you got a laugh from this article and I hope I get a laugh from the comments too.
